The word acne has been described by many different names, such as acne pimples, zits, papules, pustules, lesions, nodules, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts but these are just terms that refer to the actual condition.
True acne is considered to be a disorder of the oil glands (called sebaceous glands) of the skin. These sebaceous glands are most prevalent on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back. They contain a material called sebum, which is a lubricating substance for the skin that normally makes its way to the skin surface through the skins pores. The pore consists of a tiny hair and a hair follicle.
Acne problems start when the skin pores become plugged and the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands cannot get to the skin surface – instead it gets stuck in the hair follicle. Skin bacteria then starts multiplying in the follicle, the plugged pores become inflamed, and lesions on the skin appear. This is how acne develops and manifests itself.
The next big question is: Why? What causes acne to happen in the first place? There are different schools of thought on this. Some doctors say the cause of acne is not known, while others say that acne is hormonally induced. Some authorities insist that diet plays a big role in the cause and treatment of this condition, and some say that its genetics that tend to determine whether someone will have acne breakouts or not have them.
Whatever the cause is, whether its a constant and recurring problem, or just an annoying breakout once and awhile, there are millions of people in every age group that suffer with acne, from teenagers to adults.
